How can I customize the login box? I'd like to alter it to remove the register link and customize the font and layout.

Okay. It's the last bit I can't figure out, 'Just need to customize the /interface/login_box.php page.' Could you suggest ways how to customize this page and remove the register link?

Have you opened that template w/ a text editor? You can simply remove that link and change the HTML that designs the login & logged in sections.
