Im sorry, but i cannot work out the difference between a usergroup and a membership type.
Anyone care to explain ?

Membership Types are the options your visitor can select during initial registration.
With Membership Types you are able to assign specific options to. Such as what user groups (none, 1, multiple groups) they should get assigned to based on the membership type they choose during registration.
You can also assign different payment gateways, length of account, cost, etc.
