Greetings all,
Most important change is the way PayPal is handled during registration. It will now be handled via the register.php.
The account will be set in the pending payments database until the paypal payment comes in.
The improvement from how it was handled previously will be letting the user go through the register.php process, filling in any custom fields setup.
Once payment is received the account is taken from pending to active.
Any other feature requests or fixes / enhancements are encouraged before release.

In other words, will all free members now go into the "pending" section and stay there (as they will never upgrade)

This does not change anything with current users. Everything will be the same.
On new registrations instead of starting the process by clicking on the paypal payment button on your site. They would go through register.php (which currently is not used when paying with paypal).
This is good as it allows your potential registrations to fill out custom fields you setup during registration. Previously that was not available due to starting at paypal.
So process is:
New account register.php --> Account is set in the pending area --> They're shown a page (customizable) with your paypal button on it which is entered via the back-end admin / membership types area. They click on the paypal button and pay via paypal and the account is then taken from pending to active.
can you explain the process tree for FREE members?

register.php --> Select a membership type created via the admin that has no payment gateway --> They're registered.
